BELLY DANCING-What better exercise after the holidays
Count this as cross training! Just what I needed after all the food I ate yesterday. I definitely used my belly tonight! It was fun.

Turkey Trot- My PB time
Wow! I got my best time in the 5 K today 26.29. I had had to change my pace in training for my first half marathon a couple of weeks ago ( 2.19.10) so was not sure how if I could change my pace to a 5K but I did GOOD! Once that first mile was done and I got into my stride it was OK.
My first time in a race was last year at this same place ( Tamarac, Florida) and at that time I was thankful that I finally finished it in 29 something ( it didn’t matter what time, just that I finished it and happy that it was under 30.00)

What ascent is not a hill?-a bridge over the Intercoastal
On my first half marathon yesterday I was running good and at the 4 mile mark I saw it! The sun was coming up from the east and shone on it. It was my silver “hill,” the bridge over the Intecoastal. I could see the runners ahead going over it. South Florida is so flat I had never had to learn how to ascend and descend safely. I saw runners walking up the bridge but I talked myself into doing another “first” and ran it all the way up and down. My question is how do you run down. Slowly, at your momentum, leaning forwards, leaning backwards? Give me your input. I don’t want to hurt myself the next time, and there will be a next time.

First Half Marathon-I was 9th in my age group-so glad I tried it!
WOW once I started writing this it is like a novel. Hope you enjoy it.
All I can say it was FANTASTIC! My time was 2.19.10 and I ran all the way and only stopped at the water stations. They offered Gatorade or water but I am used to water during training so stayed with that. Took half a clif block at every other water station. Not sure if it is all mental or not but it worked for me. The weather even cooperated, for South Florida it was a nice 62 degrees with about a 20 hour mile wind. Nice for my first long run. Have only run 8.5 miles max. at training so after that it was all wishful thinking. I told my 3 kids that I needed them to cheer me on after the 8 mile mark and 1 daughter was at the 8 mile mark and the other at the 8.5 mile mark and saw me on the way and on the return trip. My hubby and my son and his girlfriend were at the finish.
Here’s my play by play.
Butterflies were going great guns in my stomach all the way to the race. I left my glasses in the car and could not read the instructions and had no idea how to put on the new tags. Thankfully someone ( a guy) saw my dilemma and helped me. It was cooler than I was expecting and not sure whether to wear a long sleeve shirt or not. Shirt was in my car about 1/2 mile away. Decided to stay with sleeveless shirt. (all along the race I saw discarded shirts.) Heard that some races banned radios so had to look around at the start to see if others were using their radios and they were (that helped me get through the race too.) I saw a friend (fellow runner but spectator) at the 11 mile/pace area so it was nice talking to him. When they did the count down I was overwhelmed. Then the race started. I followed the main rule; follow my plan and pace myself, don’t get caught up with speeding up with other runners.(suggested on this site- thank you for that.) It worked. I passed people who passed me earlier and I felt that I accomplished my goal of pacing myself.
Once I got home I had a nice hot bath and have been on a high every since. Drank plent of water all day. Only one problem, I have a “blood” blister on the base of my big toe on one foot but to me that is only my one proof that I did it and I am proud of it. It is also my “show and tell”

YES, I SWIM with FINS-what a shocker
All you swimmers out there-don’t be shocked. I hate wasting time and need to get to the other side faster so I wear fins. When I tried without fins I got frustrated and if I use a kickboard I go backwards!!! I love to swim and get in 2000 yards so to me it is a good workout. This was my easy day befor running my first half marathon on Sunday. I have butterflies in my stomach now just thinking about it.

A smile can make your day too!
Actually was looking forward to this run, knowing that it was my last one before the half marathon on Sunday. I watched my pace and made sure I drank water. Felt good. On the back end of my run at a cross street I took care because although I had the walk light you never know what those cars that make a right turn will do. The car let me cross. I waved a thank you. As I ran further on I saw the same car! The man opened his window to tell me he wanted to tell me that he liked my smile!!!! I never knew I smiled so guess that is a good sign after 5.5 miles. That made me feel good for the last half mile. As I got closer to home I started thinking other reasons why that was not good. Maybe he was checking to see if I was young and cute and found out then that I was old but not cute, but not bad. When I told my daughter she said he might be a stalker and asked if he asked for my phone number! Thankfully I ran later today (45 minutes) because of the holiday so he can look for me all he wants, I will not cross paths with the driver again.
It certainly made my day.

Belly Dancing as “Cross Training ?”
What better thing to do on a Friday night but Belly dancing!!!! Thought I would check this out at my gym. I didn’t feel so odd because only the instructor was dressed up. I was surprised I worked up a sweat and it was a lot of fun. This is what happens when you are over 55, anything is better than watching TV. Hope this counts as Cross Training!!!!

Run - extended my (psycho) time
Getting over the idea of me running for more than an hour is daunting. Today was nice and cool for South Florida (61 degrees) and I felt good. I ran for 1 hour and 38 minutes!!!! I started through the developement and kept adding on streets. I left my water on a mailbox so I would have to return there then continued from there to my 4 mile normal route. The ball of my feet started to hurt after 45 minutes but not enough to have to stop. At the end it really throbbed but once I walked my cooldown it stopped. Still checking on why. My half marathon is in 10 days. Run and walk will be my philosphy.

Strength Training added to my weekly routine
Yes, I am glad the gym started an early morning class. Arms, Quads and Abs had better be strong after this workout. Did the bike for 2 miles as warm up to the class. We worked our arms with dumbbells and 12 lb. rods with squats! Those squats are a killer!!! I know my legs will be fine today and tomorrow then the next day I will be lucky if I can sit and stand! The ab workout was bad too but I kept up with the instructor so guess I am OK with those.

Run - 7 miles round trip
All prepared to run. Had my water, my sport beans, my flashing lights, my watch, my ipod and I was out the door. OOPS! Weather a little cooler and feels like it will rain. Hate rain in my eyes, so back in the house. While there hubby tells me it is not rain but fog so out I go without my hat.
The sport beans is to get used to eating something at water stations in my half marathon. I want to know that it agrees with me and not upsets my stomach so I am practicing with different things. I left my water half way again so that I had to return and not give up!!!
Run was nice but again my ball of my foot and bottom of my toes started throbbing at the 45 minute mark. When I finished and started walking it eased up after 200 yards so now i know what to expect when the race is on. Guess I will get used to it. Iam going to the running sotre on thursday for a workshop so will bring up my problem and see what their suggestions are.
